Cosmogirl, Seventeen, and all other cyclo-clone teenage magazine that reciprocate and advocate the actions of a dumb ill-twitted coming of age girl (person).
As a former and guilty reader of these past time favorites, I have come to notice over the years that these eye gripping and repetitively themed magazine covers (and articles) teach nothing more to the up and coming youth of today, than how to "kiss," "secret tips to do for your crush," "is it love or just a crush?", "lipstick shades to match your mood," "slouch boots are the newest winter trend!"," wanna learn how to catch his attention & keep it?" "when to text him & when not to," "flirty texts he's dying to get." and on and on and on.
You get the point.
I should stop here and let you draw the conclusions for yourself,
but let me just give you a small bit of the ones i have drawn thus far.
Ever notice how most of the titles start with "please," "love," "make", "flirt", "kiss", "look," "hot" etc. and are followed by the word[s] "for him","with him" "to him" ?
Shouldn't all that energy spent into typing these redundant and empty articles be spent on... hmm i don't know; teaching children about the recession and current economical state that they will be handling as adults?
I mean, in the long run & in reality, what is more important... knowing how to send the perfect texts to ones crush, or learning what needs to be done in order to stablize the current physical state we are now in and facing?
They are drugging these unknowing kids with monetary things of no relevant importance!
They are setting the mental mood for/ and of the teenage youth environment & should focus rather on shifting the awareness of mental and peripheral vision towards all of these vast and coming issues we are [currently] facing.
Soon,
the horoscopes at the end of seventeen, cosmo girl, and all other magazines alike will read the same for each sign.
Dear AQUARIUS, CAPRICORN, PISCES, ARIES, TAURUS, GEMINI, LEO, LIBRA, SCORPIO, SAGITTARIUS,CANCER, VIRGO:
"disaster is in your near future. Avoid mental dullness & dreariness; Seek refuge in magazines that say something!(better yet read a book) Free Tibet! Save Darfur! save the whales! recycle!
Stop America from hanging on its hinges! Stop reading this magazine [but do recycle all the 923898 issues you currently have sitting in your closet."
and the disclaimer at the bottom will read
disclaimer: reading this magazine may cause slight brain reversal from adulthood to adolescence, to infantry.
ahh if only.

It is unfortunate that our culture looks for meaning in trivial things. For every one caring individual it seems that there are 10 other people who just don't care about anything [except when the latest celebrity (insert tragic circumstance here)]. Marketing groups have bred a lazy mentality of significance and cater their goods towards a lowest common denominator way of thinking. Life just isn't important unless you have a giant flat screen tv and have a Coach bag. At worst we are a country of spoiled 16 year olds. At best we don't have our priorities straight. I also would be remiss to say that not everyone is like this. Just a whole bunch of them;) And there is a time and place for fluff. Only not in excess.
ReplyDeleteI know I sort of said this in an earlier comment, but again I want to encourage you to keep this up. The reason I like blogging is because folks who blog seem to have interesting things to say or have had interesting experiences. It's an internet oasis from the shallow stuff of Myspace. So, you have my support.
Ahh, I completely agree. You stated it beautifully yourself (beautiful in the sense that you hit the nail on the head more than once.)
ReplyDeleteWell, it seems like your part of this bunch
:)
the fact that you read my blogs...
means alot.
I've looked at every single drawing you have drawn.
so beautiful
As far as being a part of it all, you are right. However, I'm trying to beat them at their own game;)
ReplyDeleteSend me an email so we can talk about what kind of drawing you would like.
